Just to stick up for Mike Smith a bit here, last season he had a couple of injuries and the team in front of him was awful. But Mike Smith really was the Coyotes best player (other than OEL, but goalies have bigger impacts) and he won them 10-12 games they had no business winning.

Without Smith playing - and I'm not kidding - up to the Dubnyk/Holtby/Price level for a decent amount of the season, the Coyotes are finishing well behind the Avalanche.

His overall stats are not great, but keep in mind who was playing in front of him. Top pairing Luke Schenn, First Line Player Radem Vbrata, etc.

Point taken! But the price tag of trading for him and the cap hit? Mason just makes more sense if they choose to go that route! Younger, cheaper, better numbers

So he had some good stretches, just like Elliott, just like Johnson. But that's not enough to command a return that the comments seem to suggest. He's a 35 year old inconsistent G. Has been his whole career.

I agree, but im a biased mike Smith fan, aside from his rather large cap hit, I feel hes extremely underrated. This guy has single handedly won dozens of games over the past few years with some pretty awful rosters in front of him. Can't count how many times there's been 40+ shot/ 1-2ga efforts from him. Id imagine his high danger% is up there..
Also can't forget him solo bouncing the hawks in '11 or '12
Id love to see crow+ for Smith +sal retained.. Imagine the hawks now impotent breakout with Smith sending pucks out. To that point, its either Smith or bishop for best puck handler, teams value that
Lastly, im also pretty high on elliot so what do I know, goalies are often rated out of context.

Everyone thought Elliot was poop hot "based on the numbers" but look what happened. Mentally weak. I'll take Smith any day of the week.

Going back to what it will take to get him I really don't think it will be much....

Mike Smith is a solid goalie, but his best years are behind him. It would be another temporary Goalie that the Flames don't need, I can see Smith retiring this season with Arizona.

Bottom line is Elliott had great numbers with a great defensive team around him in St Louis, like a couple other people have pointed out, Mike Smith has posted good numbers with an awful team in front of him.

These Ovi rumors gotta stop! If we trade Bennett I will find BT and smack him

I would highly consider Smith as one of the better options but that was with the thinking that he would be cheap to acquire

Even if he was the Coyote's best player, it doesnt say much cause their team is awful
Also....I would think that they would want to sell Smith for anything given they want to get younger, I assume they would prefer to hold on to Domingue as their future netminder

that cap hit is no joke, I think it'd be hard to find anyone wanting to spend real assets to bring in Smith

Also, a full NMC that I can guarantee the Coyotes have tried to squirm out of a few times.

I agree...Friedman barking that the Coyotes would want alot....for a 35 year older tending with 2 years of a pretty high hit. Doesnt seem that valuable to me!!!

How exactly is Elliott mentally weak? It takes a lot of mental toughness to battle back in the second half the way Elliott did after the team had basically given up on him? A bad stretch in the playoffs makes a goalie mentally weak? There's a whole lot of mentally weak goalies then including pretty much every goalie that's been linked to the Flames so far.

Bottom line is Elliott had great numbers with a great defensive team around him in St Louis, like a couple other people have pointed out, Mike Smith has posted good numbers with an awful team in front of him.

Elliott also had great numbers when the Flames were playing well defensively. That's kind of how it works. There are zero goalies capable of putting up great numbers on teams that can't play well defensively.

DID YOU WATCH THE 4TH GAME? I'm sorry but that's ALL mental. He poop the bed when it mattered most. When he was the "starter" he shat the bed too at the beginning of the year. He plays well as the underdog, not so well otherwise.

He was good for a bad goal almost every game he played this season. He allowed multiple soft goals in the playoffs. Whether he's mentally weak or not; he can't steal a game.

Speaking of...
who are we taking?
Is cool to see. My cousin was in the top 25 in 3 categories at the combine! He'll likely go early 2nd round me thinks...
